IF THERE IS A NUCLEAR BLAST

If there is advanced warning of an attack:

Take cover immediately, as far below ground as possible, though any shield or shelter will help protect you from the immediate effects of the blast and the pressure wave.

If there is no warning:

   1. Quickly assess the situation.
   2. Consider if you can get out of the area or if it would be better to go inside a building to limit the amount of radioactive material you are exposed to.
   3. If you take shelter go as far below ground as possible, close windows and doors, turn off air conditioners, heaters or other ventilation systems. Stay where you are, watch TV, listen to the radio, or check the Internet for official news as it becomes available.
   4. To limit the amount of radiation you are exposed to, think about shielding, distance and time.

-Shielding: If you have a thick shield between yourself and the radioactive materials more of the radiation will be absorbed, and you will be exposed to less.
-Distance: The farther away you are away from the blast and the fallout the lower your exposure.
-Time: Minimizing time spent exposed will also reduce your risk.

Chemical release/Biological event may follow a nuclear attack (also radiation should be treated as a hazardous chemical)...

-Listen to news for instructions: FOLLOW THEM
-Prepare to evacuate and/or use disaster supply kit
-Stay away from victims until threat is identified
-Stay upwind, take shallow breaths through a towel
-Avoid possible contaminated food, water, and area

If A blast occurs, immediately drop and cover your head with your arms. There will be a bright flash, do not look at it no matter how hard the temptation.
You will feel the initial shock wave pass you, stay down, do not move, as the blast wave creates a vac*mn which then will fill up with a return wave. If you stand up or move before the second wave passes you, you will be harmed by debrie from the incoming wave.
You will have to then consider if it is best to move to shelter or get out of area. Readiation is acc*mulative, any dose you get stays with you, so protect yourself. Clothing or wrappings will help protect you from Alpha and Beta particals. Gamma (also known sometimes as hard radiation) will penetrate unless you have good shielding.
Lots of dirt or concrete can help protect you from some amounts of hard radiation.
As in all ememrgency situations, clean water and food will be a top priority, but first give first aid to any injured.
